Tata Steel is scaling up artificial intelligence, connected workforce systems and remote operations to make industrial safety more predictive, with the company already deploying more than 10,000 CCTV cameras and AI-enabled surveillance to identify unsafe behaviour and intervene before accidents occur.
Instead of relying on human operators to scan walls of monitors, AI models scan video feeds autonomously. When a worker bypasses a safety harness protocol, steps into an unauthorised zone, or breaches a restricted heavy-machinery perimeter, the system generates immediate alerts for floor supervisors.
The company is also deploying its Connected Workforce platform across the country. AI-enabled gate passes and beacons installed inside plants track personnel movement and automatically flag deviations, helping ensure workers enter only authorised and safe areas.
Tata Steel is also expanding its Integrated Remote Operation Centres, known as iRoCs. These hubs consolidate CCTV feeds, machinery telemetry and environmental data onto large digital display walls, allowing operators to monitor and control hazardous tasks from secure environments and reducing direct worker exposure to high-noise, high-heat conditions.
Company officials note that this reduction in physical exposure also serves to attract younger demographics into heavy industry.
Tata Steel credits AI surveillance, connected workforce tracking and logistics safety systems with a 38 per cent reduction in its Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate over 15 years.
In April this year, Tata Steel inked a strategic partnership with Google Cloud to deploy a unified agentic AI across its global value chain, supporting industrial safety and efficiency.
The company integrates its operational safety metrics directly into enterprise risk management frameworks, subjecting them to regular review by board-level committees including the Safety, Health & Environment Committee and the Risk Management Committee.
