At Mahindra & Mahindra's 80th Annual General Meeting, Chairman Anand Mahindra framed geopolitical uncertainty and supply-chain disruption not as threats but as the precise moment to accelerate, what he called entering an "Attack Mode", borrowing a metaphor from Formula E racing.
The company's sharpest evidence for that stance is its patent record. Mahindra & Mahindra's granted patents grew from 56 in FY16 to 1,334 in FY26, a more than 20-fold increase over the decade. The conversion rate of patent applications to granted patents improved from 8% in FY16 to over 65% for applications filed over the last decade, a shift that points to a more disciplined and productive innovation pipeline, not just a higher volume of filings.
Of the 1,334 granted patents, 60% are linked to M&M's Automotive Business, while the remaining 40% relate to its Farm Business. The company's total cumulative patent applications stand at 2,728 as of March 2026.
The manufacturing investment anchoring the strategy is equally large in scale. Mahindra & Mahindra announced on February 6, 2026, that it will establish its largest integrated manufacturing facility for automobiles and tractors in Nagpur, Maharashtra, with an investment of Rs 15,000 crore over 10 years. The facility will be developed across 1,500 acres in Vidarbha, and once operational in 2028, the plant will have an annual production capacity of over 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors.
The automotive facility will support Mahindra's next-generation platforms, including the NU_IQ architecture, and will manufacture vehicles across multiple powertrains internal combustion engine, electric vehicle, and future technologies for domestic and global markets.
Mahindra said the group sees the present disruption as an opportunity to build a lasting competitive advantage rather than a reason to delay decisions. Together, the patent surge and the Nagpur commitment are being positioned as M&M's answer to a persistent question about whether Indian automakers can sustain genuine, in-house R&D at global scale.
