India tops Microsoft's 2026 AI work index with 32% frontier professionals

Microsoft's 2026 Work Trend Index, released on 3 September, places India first among 10 markets for the share of workers it calls Frontier Professionals , people who go beyond individual AI tasks to design and manage multi-step automated workflows using AI agents.

The survey, conducted across 20,000 AI users, found that 32% of India's AI-using professionals qualify as Frontier Professionals, against a global average of 16%. The gap at the leadership level is equally wide: 44% of Indian respondents said their organisations have clear, aligned AI strategies, compared with 26% globally.

The nature of the work being done is also shifting. Nearly 8 in 10 Indian AI users said AI is enabling them to do work that was not possible a year ago, versus 58% globally. Among India's Frontier Professionals, that figure rises to 85%.

Human oversight remains central despite the pace of automation. Quality control of AI output was named an important skill by 63% of Indian respondents, the highest of any market surveyed, while 59% cited critical thinking. Some 87% of respondents said they treat AI-generated output as a starting point rather than a final answer.

The enterprise data supports the broader trend. Infosys, TCS, Wipro and LTM collectively signed up for more than 400,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot seats in under six months. At TCS, selected teams reported productivity improvements of 20–25% in research and content production. At Wipro, employees are generating 7.5 million prompts a month, with monthly active usage crossing 95%.

Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, said India had moved from stated intent to implementing human-agent teams at scale.
