Tata Steel has announced a Rs 10,000 crore investment across its Jharkhand operations by 2028, with the company saying the outlay will generate 2,000 direct and indirect jobs in the state.
The single largest allocation of Rs 7,000 crore is earmarked for HIsarna and Easy Melting Technology, two low-carbon ironmaking processes the company is looking to scale up at its Jamshedpur facility. HIsarna, a patented Tata Steel technology, produces iron without the need for conventional coke, sinter, or pellet plants, and emits approximately 20 per cent less carbon dioxide than the traditional blast furnace route. The company says a one-million-tonne pilot plant is planned within the existing Jamshedpur ecosystem.
The EASyMelt technology, short for Electrically Assisted Syngas Melter, is designed to cut carbon emissions from conventional blast furnace operations by up to 50 per cent through the use of syngas in place of coke.
Beyond the green technology push, Rs 2,600 crore has been earmarked for expansion of the Tinplate Division, while a further Rs 1,500 crore will go toward a new Combi mill.
Tata Steel currently operates 11 MTPA steel plants at Jamshedpur and a 1 MTPA facility at Gamharia in Jharkhand. The company aims to grow its total Indian capacity to 40 MTPA, up from the current 27.35 MTPA, through a mix of expansion and transition to lower-emission steelmaking.
