Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is travelling to the United States from 29 September to 5 October for ministerial-level trade negotiations, the Indian government confirmed on Monday.
The trip follows months of talks that have yet to produce a final agreement. India and the US are yet to reach a consensus on a trade agreement, with New Delhi holding out for a better deal.
Goyal will engage bilaterally with his US counterpart as part of ongoing efforts to advance a "balanced and mutually beneficial" India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and finalise an interim deal in line with the Joint Statement of 7 February 2026.
Goyal will also attend the G20 Trade Ministers' meeting in Milwaukee from 30 September to 1 October, where he will hold bilateral talks with his US counterpart.
His itinerary includes engagements with American business leaders in Milwaukee and Chicago, with planned discussions spanning manufacturing, consumer goods, agricultural businesses, retail and technology.
The broader objective of the BTA, announced in February this year, is to enhance bilateral trade between the two countries to $500 billion by 2030.
Earlier this month, India said it had told Washington that new measures to levy tariffs over the purchase of Russian oil could impact bilateral ties. The remark signals that the negotiations extend beyond trade volumes alone, touching on geopolitical considerations that could affect the shape of any eventual deal.
For Indian businesses, the practical question is whether the discussions produce clearer market access, predictable costs and an implementation timetable.
