Indian IT services firms, Global Capability Centres, and AI-first startups are stepping up recruitment for Forward Deployed Engineers, a role that embeds technical staff directly inside client organisations to ship working AI systems rather than proofs of concept.
FDE job postings have surged more than 700% globally over the past year, with India emerging as one of the fastest-growing markets for the role. Companies including Palantir, Databricks, Snowflake, Salesforce, IBM, and ServiceNow all have active FDE hiring tracks out of offices in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Gurugram, while Indian IT majors such as TCS, Infosys, and Wipro are building their own AI deployment practices.
The hiring push is being driven by a well-documented bottleneck: research from MIT's NANDA initiative found that 95% of enterprise generative AI pilots showed no measurable business impact. The problem is not the models, it is the integration work required to connect AI to a customer's existing data, workflows, and legacy infrastructure. FDEs are hired to close that gap from inside the client environment.
Firms are responding with headcount targets. Coforge, which has more than 20 specialised FDEs on staff, plans to expand that pool to around 100. LTM, the Larsen and Toubro Group IT company, announced a Centre of Excellence with a plan to develop more than 1,000 engineers in AI skills including the FDE function. Scaler, India's AI-native tech education platform, has committed ₹25 crore to train 10,000 FDEs over the next year.
The talent gap remains acute. Only 5% of senior technology leaders currently carry long-term production AI deployment experience at enterprise scale, according to a separate industry analysis. A joint estimate by NASSCOM, McKinsey, and NITI Aayog warns India could face a shortage of 14 lakh AI professionals by end of 2026 if upskilling does not accelerate.
For working engineers, the shift matters in practical terms. FDE salaries in India range from ₹18 LPA to ₹60 LPA or more depending on employer tier, with global AI labs offering the highest pay bands. Unlike most Indian tech roles, the market places practitioner skill and demonstrated deployment work above college pedigree or competitive programming credentials.
