EPFO has clarified that members who lose their jobs can access the bulk of their provident fund savings far sooner than many realise. Under the current rules, a member unemployed for just one month can withdraw 75% of the total balance, covering both employee and employer contributions as well as accrued interest without closing the account.

The PF account remains open after the 75% withdrawal, and if the member finds a new job, the same account can be transferred to the new employer.

The remaining 25% becomes available after one year of unemployment, with the intent that a 10-year service tenure is not disrupted. Retaining service continuity matters because it is linked to pension eligibility and long-term social security benefits.

EPFO also permits withdrawals for home repairs or renovation. Members can draw an amount equal to the lowest of 12 months' basic salary plus dearness allowance, the employee's share of contributions including interest, or the actual repair costs.

The revised rules also reduce the minimum period for EPF membership to 12 months for various types of advance withdrawals.

Claims can be filed entirely online. Members log in to the EPFO Member e-Sewa Portal using their UAN and password, then navigate to the 'Online Services' tab and click on 'Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C & 10D)'. From there, they select 'PF Advance (Form 31)' and choose the relevant withdrawal reason such as job loss or home repairs.

Members whose Aadhaar details are seeded with their UAN do not require employer attestation to make a withdrawal. Under EPFO 3.0, claims up to ₹5 lakh are settled automatically without manual intervention, reducing processing time.
