Over 30 firms have now tied job cuts to AI, with HSBC and Amazon leading

A Reuters running factbox tracking AI-linked layoffs, last updated 22 October 2026, has grown to 31 confirmed entries since October 2025. The announced cuts add up to roughly 102,800 roles across technology, finance, manufacturing and consumer goods.

HSBC is now the single largest contributor, with 20,000 cuts about 10% of its workforce announced in March 2026 as part of an AI-driven overhaul. Amazon follows at 16,000 corporate jobs, confirmed on 28 January 2026. In a blog post, Beth Galetti, Amazon's senior vice president of people experience and technology, said the changes were aimed at "reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy." US-based staff were given 90 days to seek an internal role, with severance available to those who did not find one. Together with Amazon's October 2025 round of 14,000 cuts, the two reductions represent roughly 9% of its corporate workforce surpassing its prior record of 27,000 cuts made between late 2022 and early 2023, according to CNN.

Other confirmed entries in the Reuters factbox include Barclays, which is cutting around 5,000 roles, or 5% of its workforce, in October 2026, citing AI adoption. Standard Chartered announced more than 7,000 cuts over four years of AI-driven operational streamlining. Microsoft said on 6 July 2026 it would cut about 4,800 jobs, or 2.1% of its workforce, affecting its commercial and Xbox businesses. Dow announced roughly 4,500 cuts ,13% of its workforce on 29 January 2026, citing automation and AI streamlining. Block cut more than 4,000 roles, nearly half its workforce, in an AI-focused restructuring in February 2026. Intuit said it would eliminate about 3,000 roles, approximately 17% of its workforce, with CEO Sasan Goodarzi telling staff the restructuring was aimed at focusing resources on AI. Atlassian cut around 1,600 jobs, about 10% of its workforce, in March 2026.

The spread runs well beyond pure technology. Banks including HSBC, Barclays, Standard Chartered, Mizuho, and SEB now sit alongside chemical producer Dow, tobacco group BAT, and logistics software firm WiseTech on the Reuters list. That reach into traditional industries and financial services is a shift from earlier AI-linked layoff cycles, which were concentrated in software and cloud.

For workers in corporate, managerial and operational roles, the pattern has direct implications: the job titles most exposed are those the companies themselves describe as layers of bureaucracy or processes that AI can now handle.
